ELEUTHERA
ISLAND, BAHAMAS
|
Eleuthera
has long been the favored "outer island". There, you'll
find unspoiled beaches, vibrant colors, rich forests,
rolling hills and very friendly residents. Like
Hawaii, Eleuthera is known for excellent surfing and
the cultivation of pineapples.
The array of
colors will dominate the canvas as you stroll through
the streets. From the Sherwin Williams poster homes, to
the beautifully adorned bougainvillea, the scenery is
spectacular. |
Located 60 miles
east of Nassau, the island
of Eleuthera is dominated by three settlements; North
Eleuthera, Governor's
Harbour and Rock Sound.
As the
original Bahamian settlement, Eleuthera has been a
refuge for groups seeking freedom from religious
persecution. Eleuthera is derived from the Greek word
eleutheros, translated:
freedom.
Just off the coast, you'll
find a tiny village, Harbour
Island, a settlement akin to the State's Nantucket
Island. The clapboard homes and picket fences create
the canvas, the people provide the image.
