Governor's Harbour (a.k.a. Colebrook Town), the capital city of Eleuthera, is located near the midpoint of the island. During the 19th Century, the island was waist high in the production of pineapples. Even today, you'll spot the old pineapple plantations dotting the landscape.
Governor's is repleat with the clapboard houses and ornate architecture. During the springtime, Queen's highway is adorned with beautiful royal poincianas. Governor's is also said to be the original settlement of the Eleutheran Adventurers. Make sure to go shelling on the south side of the island. The atlantic side boasts the nicest beaches.

GOVERNORS HARBOUR is located @ the center of the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas. Governors was the first

permanent European Settlement, established by William Sayles ( a former Governor of Bermuda) and religious

freedom-seeking adventurers (a.k.a. Eleutherans) arrived. Sayles set sail in 1647 to establish new lands to the

south. Several weeks after embarking from Bermuda towards the warmer climes in the south, Sayles ship-wrecked

on the reefs of the northern end of the island, near the area now known as Preachers Cave. It was here that the

thankful survivors named their island Eleuthera, the Greek word for freedom. Eventually, Sayles' followers made it

around the island to a quiet harbour on the Caribbean coast and set up the first new world republic on Cupids Cay

in 1648. As with many new ventures, however, arguments arose about basic survival needs and many left. Some

went back to Bermuda to beg forgiveness of the King and resume their lives. Others followed Sayles to New
