HISTORY
Stella Maris is
one of the most scenic islands of the Bahamas. The drive along Queen's Highway
is one of the
most spectacular.
The island has
Lucayan Indian caves or "Yumas" that provide for adventure and exploration.
Archaeologists suggest that the caves were once used for ceremonies and religious
purposes.
The island folk are scattered among the 30 something settlements. You'll find
a large population of "brights"
or the anglo saxon decendent who mixed with the black settlers.
The colonists established a plantation system that bore fruit. The system provided for tranquility among the inhabitants as the plantations establised a hierarchy or the proverbial "totum pole".
The commerce on
Long Island was buoyed by the sheep hearding industry throughout the 19th and
20th
centuries. Today, you'll still find the shepards working their sheep along with
the loyal companion, the Border
Collie (I have 3).
Farming is also
predominant on the island. Corn, Bananas, vegetables and pinaples are all cultivated
on
Long Island.
Columbus Memorial
is located on Long Island. This 15ft tall monument is dedicated to the aboriginal
people
of Long Island and to Christopher Columbus. At the top of this monument, hangs
a rusty globe and cross.
ACTIVITIES
BAHAMAS DIVING ASSOCIATION OFFICIAL SITE
Long Island is
acclaimed as a diver's paradise. There, you'll encounter Shark Reef and the
increadible wall dives
just off the coast of the island.
Long Island also
boasts excellent fishing all year long. Dolphin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Mackerel,
Sailfish and Marlin is what you can expect when casting your line into the deep
blue waters off of Long Island. If you are
boatless, you can cast your line from shore and fight the mighty bonefish.
Stella Maris has the best beaches on the island. The Four Love Beaches are located at the end of Oceans View Drive. You'll understand why they are called the "Love" beaches.
